The proprietor of Père Maurice's Auberge popped up from his table, adjusted his mauve beret, and went dodging, with considerable rapidity, between the tables the moment he recognized Harry and Jennie entering his restaurant, trailing swirls of night fog. She paused to shut her umbrella.

"Harry, long time no see," he said loudly. "And none other than Miss Jennie Barr, the undisputed best-looking blooming lady journalist on three or four continents. At least."

Laughing and dodging his attempted hug, she said, "I haven't seen you since you became Maurice, Benny, and resettled over here."

"Allow me to escort you kids to a choice table. The meal's on the house, of course, but you have to pick up your tab on the wine."

"You're even more gracious than when you were the bouncer at Harpoon Louie's Café in Brooklyn," she told him.

"Right you are, Miss Jennie, I'm working closer to being a real gent," Benny acknowledged as he helped them to a candlelit table in an alcove. "You two ain't hitched yet?"

"Just good pals," Harry assured him, pulling back a cane-bottom chair.

Waving his beret and making a get-over-here gesture at a nearby pristine waiter, the proprietor said, " Bon appetite , youse two," and went dodging off.

Harry ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir from their immaculate waiter. And then he narrowed his left eye and said, "That handsome associate editor on The Times looked quite taken with you."

"I didn't notice."

"Gave you file photos of three of Grimshaw's current associates that we're interested in, which he's not supposed to do."

"Been my experience that if a fellow, handsome or otherwise, is taken with you, what he gives you is gold trinkets and costly bijous," she said, "not photos of a few knaves."

"Okay, but even so—"

"Hush up a minute," she advised, putting her hand over his.

"What?"

"Very casually take a look at who is marching into the Auberge."

"What a coincidence, one of the very fellows we're curious about—the German ambassador."

"Accompanied by a statuesque blonde Valkyrie who is most certainly not his wife."

Running his forefinger along the tip of his nose, Harry said, "Could be the German agents are as interested in us as we are in them."
